| Abstract | Intended for those responsible for supervised work experience in all levels in further and higher education, this book debates some issues surrounding placements and outlines a procedure for managing them. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the topic. Chapter 2 discusses the educational purpose of placements. Chapter 3 suggests that some difficulties that the student faces are not only inevitable, but sources of valuable experience to be capitalized upon. Chapter 4 focuses on the role of visiting tutors from the college. It describes some tasks that visiting tutors should ideally perform and some key attitudes that they ought to adopt. Chapter 5 considers the workplace supervisor as educator. Chapter 6 is concerned with the human problems of assessing. Chapter 7 outlines a process of placement management and assessment, aimed at minimizing the human error in assessment, but also at making assessment an integral part of the process of placement management. It also shows that a viable form of summative assessment can grow from the ongoing dialogue between student and workplace supervisor. Chapter 8 provides evidence of the effectiveness of the placement management process outlined. Appendixes include guidelines for placement students, notes for workplace supervisors and for placement tutors, and a sample placement performance review. (Contains 48 references and an index.)
